Better standards needed for China’s MICE

“MICE service standards and levels vary across the sector”

Travel trade professionals are stressing the need for the MICE sector in China to adopt standards that will support the rapidly growing business events industry, TTG Asia reports. The Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration tried to address the issue last October by launching “Management & Service Standards of the Conference Industry, Part 1: Conference Organizers”, a set of standards developed by the city’s tourism bureau and the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision. Continuous management, improvement and assessment are recommended in the document.
“MICE service standards and levels vary across the sector,” said Maria Zheng, general manager of Shanghai China Travel International. “The authorities must promote industrial standards. A certain certification is also needed, like the AAA-rated tourist attractions in China. This way, overseas event owners will be able to discern and recognise professional MICE players in Shanghai, which will in turn spur more trade members to adopt such standards too.”
