Bangkok is second-highest global city destination

Positive tourism outlook dominates Thai travel mart this week
For the second year in a row, Bangkok is predicted to be the world’s second top destination, and number one in the Asia-Pacific region, with 18.24 million visitors expected to spend time there in 2015.
The newly-released results of the MasterCard Global Destinations Cities Index puts London top in the world with 18.82 million visitors, only narrowly ahead of the Thai capital.
The results added to a positive tourism outlook dominating the opening of the B2B travel trade show Thailand Travel Mart Plus 2015 this week.
Designed primarily to help Thailand’s small and medium sized enterprises gain valuable marketing and networking opportunities, the event has attracted a turnout of 362 buyers from 50 countries and 374 sellers from Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, China, Vietnam and Myanmar. Of these, 167 (46 %) are there for the first-time.
The exhibitors’ line-up is dominated by hotels, especially the many boutique properties emerging nationwide. The buyers’ contingent is dominated by tour companies from China, India and the UK as well as emerging markets.
“This is absolutely great news, which could not come at any better time than now that Thailand is seeing a strong recovery in all tourist markets,” said Juthaporn Rerngronasa, Tourism Authority of Thailand’s acting governor and deputy governor for international marketing.
Paris ranks third in the index, with 16.06 million visitors, Dubai fourth with 14.26 million visitors, and Istanbul fifth place with 12.56 million visitors. Closest to Bangkok in the Asia-Pacific region is Singapore followed by Kuala Lumpur, Seoul and Hong Kong. This ranking has remained unchanged since 2013, when the Thai capital became the first Asian city to top the global list.
