Asia drives cruise sector, Europe trickles

Asia’s main cruise markets see 50% growth in 2012

Asia is pushing growth in the cruise industry, according to the findings of a new report. The continent’s main markets – China, Hong Kong, Japan, India and South Korea – generated nearly 1.2 million passengers during the year, creating a 49% increase from the previous year, the latest Cruise Industry News Global Industry Report says.
Australia and New Zealand also continued on the path of growth, up 27% to around 700,000 passengers. The North American cruise market expanded too, up 4.5% to 11.7 million passengers.
Growth in Europe slowed to a trickle, from 6 million passengers in 2011 to 6.1 million in 2012. However, of all the individual markets in Europe, only Spain’s noticeably shrank. In South America, Cruise Industry News said that Brazil fell from 780,000 cruise passengers to around 762,000.
