More than 2,500 flights cancelled today in Atlanta

Two weeks after the last severe winter storm hit the area, more than 2,500 flights have been cancelled today at the world’s busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta ahead of a new storm front. Around 70% of flights on Wednesday are cancelled so far, with knock-off effects in the air transport system worldwide.

That comes on top of around a thousand flights axed and 900 delayed on Tuesday as a dangerous mix of ice and snow again strikes a wide band of the south and east of the USA.

“This has the potential to be a catastrophic event,” said a weather warning issued by a National Weather Service office in Georgia.

At Atlanta airport, some Delta employees were reported to be sleeping on planes because of the lack of free hotel rooms.

The storm will take snow eastwards towards Washington DC in the coming days and could reach as far as New Jersey.
