Searchers find wreckage in Indonesia near dormant volcano

An aerial search of the area where a Russian-made Sukhoi Superjet 100 lost contact has found wreckage by a cliff near a dormant volcano. The aircraft was on a demonstration flight with around 45 people on board when it disappeared from radar screens 50 minutes after taking off from Jakarta. The Indonesian president himself has demanded a thorough investigation. The crash site is believed to be at the edge of Salak Mountain, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said in a television broadcast, about 1.5km from where the plane last made contact. There are no reports yet of any survivors.
Among those on board were Indonesian airline representatives and journalists, as well as Russian pilots and technicians.
The Superjet is a mid-range aircraft that can carry up to 100 people. It is the first commercial aviation plane made by Sukhoi, a military manufacturer. The company, a joint venture with Italy’s Finmeccanica, had been planning to sell 42 aircraft of this type to Indonesia’s fast-growing aviation market.
