“We have agreed to work together to discuss a potential merger”
American Airlines has finally given in to months of pressure from US Airways, by agreeing to think about a potential merger between the two airlines. The pair stated on Friday that they have signed a non-disclosure agreement, allowing them to share confidential information.
“It does not mean we are merging”, US Airways CEO Doug Parker clarified. “It simply means we have agreed to work together to discuss and analyse a potential merger.”
A merger would create an airline as big as the world’s largest, United Continental Holdings Inc., and the slightly smaller Delta Air Lines.
Since American Airlines (a oneworld alliance member) entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection nine months ago, US Airways (a Star Alliance member) has been the most enthusiastic competitor about a merger.
