Having the pleasure to observe whales and dolphins in their natural habitat is something that few of us get the chance to do, but actually witnessing a 160 ton, 80 foot whale approach your whale watching boat is truly a once in a life time experience.

This is exactly what 20 lucky passengers onboard Captain Dave’s Dolphin Safari got the chance to experience.

“Our boat was completely stopped, and then this blue whale, the largest animal that ever lived approached us. And yes I was very nervous. I don’t know why the whale came towards us, but it was his choice – and who am I to argue with a 160 ton animal that is 80 feet long,” said Captain Dave Anderson, whale watching expert and captain onboard the Dolphin Safari Whale Watching trips.

“We have the largest concentration of blue whales on earth off California. It is not unusual for blue whales to approach us, but this is the closest encounter I have ever had with a blue whale.”

The now famous footage was shot by Captain Dave on the waters surface, and passenger Leslie Jeanne Morava captured breathtaking underwater footage while in the boats underwater viewing pod. It is the viewing pods that really make the California Whale Watching trips at Dolphin Safari truly unique. The boat is equipped with two underwater viewing pods that allow passengers an up close and personal viewing experience with the dolphins and whales at Dana Point.
