Cabin crew and pilots to strike for 24 hours
Cabin crew and pilots at Alitalia say they will strike for 24 hours on September 22. The Italian carrier says it is implementing “special measures” for the walkout, but flight cancellations are inevitable.
The strike was originally due on September 6 but was postponed because of the recent earthquake.
“The trade unions ANPAC, ANPAV and USB, representing some of the Alitalia pilots and flight attendants, have confirmed a 24-hour strike Sept. 22, despite cancellation of industrial action by the national unions FILT-CGIL, FIT-CISL, UIL Trasporti and UGL,” Alitalia said in a statement.
“As a consequence, Alitalia was forced to cancel many flights scheduled on Sept. 22.”
The airline, which is 49% owned by Etihad Airways, says it is trying to minimise disruption by rebooking passengers, bringing additional staff to Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate and setting up call-centre numbers.
