Carrier reports €130 million net loss for first half of 2015
Less than a year into the job, the chief executive of Alitalia has resigned with immediate effect. Silvano Cassano said he was leaving for personal reasons, but the news comes as the carrier reports a net loss of €130 million for the first half of 2015.
That result was better than Alitalia had budgeted for, the airline said. But the loss in the second quarter was €30 million more than in the first, affected by a fire in May at Rome’s Fiumicino airport that cost €80 million.
Loss-making Alitalia is aiming for a return to profitability by 2017. The airline appointed Cassano as CEO after Etihad Airways agreed to buy a 49% stake in the airline as part of a €1.76 billion rescue plan. His duties will be shared between other executives until a replacement is found.
