Alingsås among Europe’s top light art festivals

Festival takes place in Alingsås near Gothenburg

Now that summer is fading and the nights are getting longer, newspaper The Guardian lists Europe’s top 10 illuminated festivals, where cities light up as works of art. One of those listed is Lights in Alingsås (www.lightsinalingsas.se), near Gothenburg from September 26 to November 2.

“Alingsås, in the west of Sweden, loves its lights alright,” the newspaper says. “The city has even set up an Instagram account to document the installations you can see. Novelties here include horse and cart rides round the light sites and the chance to design your own scintillant sculpture at a workshop and have it exhibited.”

Another recommended light festival is Lux (www.luxhelsinki.fi), held in Helsinki on January 4-8, 2015. “Finland’s capital is brilliant anyway, but during Lux all manner of luminous artworks in the city centre and the Cable Factory cultural centre add to the enlightened Nordic vibe,” The Guardian writes.

Other light festivals in the list: Amsterdam Light Festival, Netherlands (November 27 – January 18); Signal lights festival, Prague, Czech Republic (October 16-19); Licht festival, Ghent, Belgium (January 29 – February 1); Glow, Eindhoven, Netherlands (November 8-15); Berlin Festival of Lights (October 10-19); Fête des Lumières, Lyon, France (December 5-8); Illuminating York, UK (October 29 – November 1); and Lumina, Cascais, Portugal (September 12-14).
