UK tour operator to start routes to northern Iceland
Iceland is to get two new connections to the UK – from Akureyri at the base of Eyjafjörður Fjord in the north of the country.
Short-break tour operator Super Break has announced two new connections from the East Midlands and Bournemouth airports. It will be the first UK operator with flights to Akuyeri, and is motivated specifically by the Northern Lights.
Flights will be operated with 189-seat 737-800s, with Bournemouth’s first flight on January 22 and the East Midlands’ service launching on February 2.
East Midlands Airport launched services to Keflavik earlier this year, so Akureyi is its second Icelandic destination. With this, the airport will be offering 57 destinations in 25 countries this winter season. Bournemouth will fly to 16 destinations in 10 countries.
“The Northern Lights phenomena is really taking off so it’s great to be able to offer our passengers this opportunity,” said Howard Ebison, commercial director at both airports.
“Initial feedback has been really positive. We’re working closely with Super Break to look at longer-term possibilities of expanding the programme already.”
