Airlines boost efforts to fight cyber threats

Systems on board may be vulnerable to cyber attack
The aviation industry is coordinating international efforts in the fight against threats from hackers and cyber-attacks.
The issue hit the headlines earlier this year, when a security researcher said he had been able to hack into flight controls via the entertainment system.
Airlines, airports and air traffic management companies share a lot of information to make flying more efficient despite ever-increasing passenger numbers. But that provides more interfaces that can be exploited by attackers.
Initiatives are being put in place to protect the industry. For example, a team put together by aviation industry associations is working on a declaration on cyber security to put to ICAO in 2016.
The security of the ADS-B system on aircraft, which sends information on a plane’s position, is also being studied. The data is unencrypted, which may make it vulnerable to outside interference.
