Airlines want governments to support global mechanism

Airlines worldwide have agreed on a plan to curb aircraft emissions, in an effort to break international deadlock over the issue and stop a carbon trade war.
Reuters reports that airlines representing 85% of global traffic meeting at an IATA AGM in Cape Town want governments to adopt a single market-based system designed to offset growth in their emissions after the year 2020. The move could stop a serious clash between the European Union and non-EU countries over the issue.
European Commissioner for Climate Action in the European Commission Connie Hedegaard seemed positive in a Twitter message yesterday: “Very strong message that airline industry seems ready to support a global MBM [market-based mechanism]. Time for governments to match it and deliver in [UN body] ICAO”.
