Pax can bid for upgrade up to 72 hours before departure
In a first for Germany, airberlin says it will introduce auctions for Business Class upgrades on long-haul flights. With “airberlin exquisite”, passengers have the option of bidding for an upgrade up to 72 hours before departure.
Any passenger can check at airberlin.com/upgrade to see whether an auction is available for their flight and can then submit a bid. They will find out at least 12 hours before departure whether their bid was successful.
“With this new service we are offering guests the opportunity to treat themselves to an exclusive flight experience in Business Class on the spur of the moment,” explained Jacob Fischer, the low-cost carrier’s vice president for distribution. “Guests can decide how much they are prepared to pay. Then a decision is made among the bids submitted as to who will go on board in Business Class.”
An upgrade “gives guests all the luxury of the new airberlin Business Class”, the airline says, along with perks like priority check-in, fast-lane boarding and lounge access. The carrier finished fitting out all its business-class cabins with new full-flat seats in spring 2014.
