Airline “loses” 10-year-old girl

Girl was flying alone in US on her way to camp

The perils of allowing your kids to travel long distances alone became apparent when the parents of a 10-year-old girl recently accused United Airlines lost their daughter, who was flying to stay at a summer camp in late June. Fortunately, the girl, Phoebe, was located an hour after being reported missing. But her parents, Annie and Perry Klebahn, argued that it seemed the airline had simply forgotten about Phoebe on her journey from San Francisco to Traverse City via Chicago, allowing her to miss her connection.
United has a third-party unaccompanied minor service that escorts children, but its representative had forgotten to show up for Phoebe. The girl says she asked the flight attendants for help, but they told her they were busy and she needed to wait. Phoebe was put on a later flight to Traverse City, but the airline then neglected to send her bags with her.
“What the Klebahns describe is not the service we aim to deliver to our customers”, United Airlines told HuffPost Travel in a statement. “We are re-depositing the miles used to purchase the ticket back into Mr Klebahn’s account in addition to refunding the unaccompanied minor charge. We certainly appreciate their business and would like the opportunity to provide them a better travel experience in the future.”
