Poor demand means A380 upgrade could come late
An upgrade to the A380 may come later than the previous estimate of 2022, Airbus’ chief executive Fabrice Bregier says.
Emirates, the largest customer of the world’s biggest passenger aircraft, is pressing Airbus for an upgrade. But other airlines need to justify the demand.
“People love the A380 as passengers. But airlines don’t,” Bregier told an industry gathering in New York.
No new orders at all were placed by commercial airlines last year for the Boeing 747 or Airbus A380, reflecting a trend in the industry towards smaller, twin-engine planes which cost less to fly, despite the recent drop in fuel prices.
