Latvian carrier reveals second and third Tallinn routes

The Latvian national airline airBaltic appears to be putting pressure on the lossmaking flag carrier of its neighbour, Estonian Air, by announcing second and third direct routes from the Estonian capital Tallinn.

It says it will start direct routes between Tallinn and Vienna, four times a week from May 7, and between Tallinn and Berlin also with four flights a week from May 6. It already flies from Tallinn to Paris.

Estonian Air also operates direct flights to these three destinations.

“In partnership with Austrian Airlines, passengers from Tallinn will be offered another direct flight, to Vienna, and connections to further destinations from there,” Martin Gauss, the Latvian carrier’s chief executive, said. “airBaltic is already flying on the Tallinn-Paris route and will launch direct flights between Tallinn and Berlin in May, which will improve connections between the Baltic capitals and European cities.”

However, a spokeswoman for Tallinn Airport said: “This is a seasonal service and according to current information the last flight from Tallinn to Vienna will take place on October 23.”
