Air travel demand strongest for years


Europe does well as global demand for air travel grows
Demand for air travel around the world showed the strongest growth for five years, the International Air Transport Association says in its latest monthly report, growing 9.6%.
Asia Pacific led the pack in terms of regional growth with a 14.3% lift, helped by the Lunar New Year falling in January, as opposed to February in 2016. Worldwide, holiday-related travel contributed up to half a percentage point in additional demand growth.
The Middle East came a strong second with 13.5%, and Europe third with an 8.3% boost in revenue passenger km. North America trailed with a 3.4% increase in RPKs.
European carriers’ international traffic grew “against a backdrop of moderate momentum in the Eurozone economy,” IATA said. Capacity rose 6.7% and load factor was up 1.2 percentage points to 80.3%.
Capacity in available seat km increased 8% worldwide, with the Middle East on 11.2%, edging out Asia Pacific’s 11.1% rise.
Among domestic markets, India showed the strongest growth with a 26.6% increase in RPKs, China 23.2%, Russia 15.4%. US domestic market growth trailed at 3.5%.
