Flight forced to land in Syria due to lack of fuel

Passengers had a nasty surprise when an Air France plane flying from Paris to Beirut was diverted due to civil unrest in the Lebanese capital, then forced to land in war-torn Syria due to lack of fuel. Even more shocking was the announcement that the Syrian authorities in Damascus had refused credit card payment to refuel the aircraft and would take only cash. The passengers were asked how much cash they had on them.
Fortunately, an alternative arrangement for the refuel was eventually found, although it is not clear what this was. The plane took off from Damascus for an overnight stop in Cyprus before finally reaching Beirut.
“As a precaution and in anticipation, the crew asked how much money the passengers had in cash to pay to fill up with fuel,” an airline spokeswoman explained.
