Senior vice president makes remarks to magazine

A senior manager at Air Berlin says the airline group may be split into two – a unit that specialises in traditional scheduled flights and another that flies to tourist destinations.

Detlef Altmann, a senior vice president at the group, made the remarks to the German magazine Focus, published on Sunday, explaining that such plans were being “examined”. Further details were not given, however.

As the company prepares for serious restructuring aimed at bringing the loss-making airline back to profitability, it has already said that all options are on the table, including a change to its business model.

Germany’s second largest airline has posted losses for five of the last six years following a period of over-ambitious expansion. Etihad Airways owns a 29.2% stake in the group.
