Airline rebooks affected passengers to other airlines

The Irish airline Aer Lingus may be hit by a four-hour strike on March 14. In preparation, the company has started to rebook passengers flying on the day to other airlines.

The reason for the possible strike is a dispute between airline and employees on retirement issues, including the funding of contributions to a large pension fund.

Aer Lingus’ largest trade union, the Services, Industrial, Professional and Technical Union, has given notice of a four-hour strike on the 14th, positioned strategically at the start of the long weekend of celebrations surrounding St Patrick’s Day on the 17th.

“The service of notice of industrial action to take place on 14 March 2014 has already caused significant commercial damage to [the] company and has inconvenienced and distressed customers,” Aer Lingus said in a statement.

Aer Lingus operates several flights between Dublin and the Nordic countries including Copenhagen, Stockholm and Helsinki, but not Oslo.
