IAG orders 18 Airbus A350-1000s for British Airways
International Airlines Group has ordered 18 Airbus A350-1000 long-haul aircraft for its British Airways subsidiary and is in further talks with manufacturers for planes for Iberia. Rolls Royce’s Trent XWB engines will power BA’s A350s.
The $6 billion order is for the biggest version of Airbus’s newest aircraft. The fact that Boeing fought hard to get the BA order reveals the intense competition between the two big manufacturers over the lucrative “mini-jumbo” market dominated by the wide-body Boeing 777.
For Iberia, IAG is planning firm orders for both A350s and Boeing 787s, but the company stressed that orders would be made only when Iberia was in a position to grow profitably after restructuring.
Meanwhile, more significant orders for Airbus could be announced when French President Francois Hollande visits China next week.
